The Narrandera women’s Australian football team (Eagles) 2.3 (15) lost against the Griffith Swans 8.5 (53) in the penultimate round of the Southern NSW Women’s League competition.
The Eagles went down by 38 points in their away game at the Griffith Ex-Servicemen’s Fields last Friday when the Swans kicked two goals in each quarter.
Despite kicking just a single behind in the opening quarter, the Eagles were still in the game, trailing by just 13 points heading into the second quarter.
However, the Swans’ leading margin blew out to 25 points as the Eagles could only manage another two behinds before going into the main break.
It took the Eagles until after the restart in the third quarter when Charlie Lamont kicked the first of her two goals in the game.
Trailing by 32 points, the Eagles added another consolation goal via the boot of Lamont in the final quarter.
The defeat leaves the Eagles in ninth place on the 14-team ladder.
Best players for the Eagles included Lucy Litchfield, Charlie Warren-Porteous, Grace Corrigan, Paige Mathewson, Jasmine Morrison and Laura Grant.
Meanwhile, the Ganmain Grong Grong Matong Lions 9.14 (68) returned to winning ways with a 62-point victory against the Northern Jets 1.0 (6) at Ariah Park Recreation Reserve.
The Lions dominated the game, having 22 more scoring shots than their opponents, who were restricted to kicking a single goal in the game.
Inaccuracy in front of the goalposts left the Lions holding a slender 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but keeping the Jets scoreless, the Lions extended their lead to 28 points at halftime.
They steadily added to their lead in the following two quarters to win comfortably.
The Lions’ goal kickers included Prue Walsh (4), Skye Hamblin (2), Jane O’Garey (2) and Stephanie Kissane (1).
Best players for the Lions were Prue Walsh, Bridie Gregurke, Stephanie Kissane, Jane O’Garey, Skye Hamblin and Julia Walsh.
Best players for the Jets included Jasmin Cassidy, Marney Johnstone, Clare Meehan, Isabelle Gaynor, Charlotte Rainbird and Maggie Johnstone.
Lana King was the Jets’ goal kicker.
In the final round of the competition, the Eagles will face an away game against the Coolamon Rovers at Kindra Park, while the Lions will host the Griffith Swans at Ganmain Sportsground.
The bounce-up for both games is scheduled for 6.30pm tomorrow (Friday).
