The Narrandera women’s Australian football team (Eagles) 5.7 (37) defeated the Coolamon Rovers 1.3 (9) in the final round of the Southern NSW Women’s League competition last Friday.
Recording four wins and four losses throughout the season, the Eagles just missed out on the finals series.
They finished in ninth position on the ladder, on the same points (16) as the Griffith Swans and Turvey Park Bulldogs, but both
the Swans and Bulldogs had a better percentage.
The Rovers also failed to qualify for the finals with just one win for the season.
Finishing the season with a victory in what was both teams’ final game of the season, the Eagles and Rovers played out a low-scoring first half.
A single goal for the Eagles and two behinds for the Rovers in the opening quarter gave both teams hope.
Just six scoring shots, five behinds for the Eagles and one for the Rovers, resulted in the Eagles taking a slender eight-point lead at the main break.
However, after the restart, the Eagles opened up their biggest lead of the game to take a 15-point lead into the final quarter.
They extended the winning margin by keeping the Rovers scoreless in the fourth quarter to win by 28 points.
Best players for the Eagles included Lucy Litchfield, Imogen Bloomfield, Laura Grant, Jasmine Morrison, Tayla Fisher and Sophie Little.
The Eagles’ goal kickers included Lucy Litchfield (2) and one each to Hannah McDonald, Grace Corrigan and Elli Hay.
Best players for the Rovers were Emmerson Buchegger, Sophie Griffith, Bridget Bell, Chloe Ryan, Jessie Halden and Annabelle Palmer.
The Rovers’ sole goal kicker was Courtney Johnson.
Meanwhile, the Ganmain Grong Grong Matong Lions 5.5 (35) will head into the finals on the back of a 34-point victory against the Griffith Swans 0.1 (1) at Ganmain Sportsground.
The Swans’ only point of the game came in the opening quarter.
The Lions never looked in trouble during a comfortable victory.
The Lions’ goal kickers included Skye Hamblin (2), Jane O’Garey (2) and Bella Reid (1).
Best players for the Lions were Svannah Godde, Prue Walsh, Gemma Guthrie, Jane O’Garey, Bridie Gregurke and Kaile Muller.
Best players for the Swans included Airlee Savage, Jenna Richards, Private player, Grace Buchan, Sophie Webb and Abby Trezise.
