Co-owner of Coroco Funiture in Narrandera Denise Makeham has undertaken a new venture as the author of a children’s book.

The budding writer is set to have her first ever book ‘Jack’s Veggie Patch’ released on July 31.

The book is targeted at children aged birth to six years and is full of funny little rhymes and illustrations by artist Rodrigo Merched.

Mrs Makeham said that she had wanted to write a book for a while but was waiting for the right moment.

“Like most authors a book has been bubbling a way in me for a long time,” she said.

“I didn’t necessarily think it was going to be children’s book but I have grandchildren now which is why I think I have really enjoyed writing this story.

“I just thought the time was right and I was in the right mindset so it has all been flowing quite well.”

Her new book takes inspiration from her everyday life, her family, her garden and so it is a deeply personal story to her.

Although this is her first book, the stories are starting to flow naturally with another seven already penned.

Mrs Makeham said that the process has been scary but she has managed to pull through.

“This is my first attempt at writing, I have always journalled and things like that but I have never written for public scrutiny… it was a very daunting and overwhelming process but I have waded through,” she said.

“[My grandchildren] love it, my little five year old knows it off by heart now, she was in the bath the other day reciting the pages.

“That’s my litmus test, when I write a little story, I let my eight year old granddaughter read it and if I see a little smile come to her face when she’s reading, I think ‘yeah, I’ve got it’.”

Snippets of illustrations have been posted by Ms Makeham on her Facebook and Instagram page ‘Sunflower Love’ in anticipation for the release.

Once the book is released, she hopes to host a book launch on Friday August 18 at Coroco Funiture in East Street which will coincide nicely with Book Week only a few days later.
