Lockhart Shire has marked an historic milestone, with Cr Jane Hunter elected as the first female mayor in the shire’s history.

Cr Hunter was elected mayor by ordinary ballot at the ordinary council meeting on Monday 21 September and will serve a two-year term.

Mayor Hunter said she was honoured to have the opportunity to serve the Lockhart Shire community in the role.

“I am honoured to have been elected mayor of Lockhart Shire and proud to be the first woman to hold this position,” mayor Hunter said.

“This is a wonderful community, and I look forward to working with my fellow councillors, council staff and our residents to continue building a strong and positive future for the shire.”

Cr Gail Driscoll was re-elected unopposed as deputy mayor and will continue in the role for the new two-year term.

Council also acknowledged outgoing mayor Cr Peter Sharp for his leadership, dedication and significant contribution during his two years as mayor.

During his term, Cr Sharp represented Lockhart Shire with commitment and worked closely with his fellow councillors, council staff, the community and other levels of government to advocate for the shire and advance a range of important priorities.

Council sincerely thanks Cr Sharp for the time, energy and commitment he has given to the role of mayor and acknowledges that he will continue to make an important contribution to the community as a councillor.

Council congratulates mayor Hunter and deputy mayor Driscoll on their election and looks forward to working together to continue delivering positive outcomes for communities across Lockhart Shire.
