Local caravan owners are encouraged to ensure their caravans are safe and roadworthy before heading off on their next adventure by attending the upcoming Caravan Weigh Day on Saturday 7 November.

The free community event, hosted by Narrandera Shire Council, will give caravan owners the opportunity to have their vehicle and caravan combination weighed and receive information about safe loading practices, towing capacity, and compliance with legal weight limits.

Road Safety Officer Rebecca Cassimatis said many travellers are unaware that their caravan may exceed its allowable weight once packed with everyday camping equipment, water, food and personal belongings.

"Overloaded caravans can significantly affect braking, handling and vehicle stability, increasing the risk of a crash," Ms Cassimatis said.

"Our Caravan Weigh Day provides the opportunity for caravan owners to better understand their vehicle and caravan weights and make informed decisions before travelling."

Participants will receive guidance on:

• Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)

• Gross Combination Mass (GCM)

• Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM)

• Tow ball mass and weight distribution

• Safe loading and towing practices

• Compliance with vehicle manufacturer specifications

The event is aimed at both experienced caravan owners and those new to towing, with experts from Complete Weight Check, on hand to answer questions and explain weighbridge results.

As caravan travel continues to grow in popularity, ensuring vehicles and caravans are loaded correctly remains an important road safety measure.

"Taking the time to check your caravan's weight can help prevent mechanical issues, improve vehicle performance and most importantly, keep everyone safer on our roads," Ms Cassimatis said.
