The Narrandera Imperial Eagles’ Football Netball Club (Eagles) senior team went down by 105 points against the Ganmain Grong Grong Matong Lions last Saturday.

The Eagles 2.4 (16) lost against the Lions 19.7 (121) in their Riverina Football League game.

Being held scoreless in the opening quarter saw the Eagles in trouble early in their final home game of the season at Narrandera Sportsground.

Trailing by 34 points at the start of the second quarter, the Eagles kicked their first goal of the game, but the Lions continued their dominance in front of the goalposts and took a 46-point halftime lead.

After the restart, the Lions ran rampant, restricting the Eagles to kicking two behinds, while booting eight goals and three behinds to extend the lead to 95 points.

Another three goals added to their tally in the final quarter gave the Lions a comfortable victory and boosted their percentage rate as they secured second spot on the ladder.

The goal kickers for the Eagles included Cooper Irons and James Smith.

Their best players were James Smith, Felix Warren-Porteous, Blake Renet, Darcy Pendergast,

Issaac Carroll and Riley Parslow-Gibson.

Meanwhile, the Eagles’ reserves 10.11 (71) defeated the Lions 7.9 (51).

Notching their fifth win of the season, the Eagles held a slender four-point lead at the end of the opening quarter.

A fantastic second-quarter performance by the Eagles, kicking six goals and four behinds, opened up a handy 41-point lead as the halftime siren sounded.

The Lions rallied after the restart to reduce the Eagles’ lead to 21 points with just the final quarter left to play.

A low-scoring fourth quarter resulted in the Eagles eventually winning comfortably by 21 points.

The Eagles’ best players included Mitchell O’Keefe, Austyn Rankin, Tomas van Buuren, Dylan Knagge, Brandon Hall and Callum Auldist.

The Eagles’ Under 18s 16.17 (113) also beat the Lions 1.2 (8) to put a firm grip on winning the minor premiership.

With only one game left to play in the regular competition, the Eagles would need to lose by a large margin in their final game of the regular season and the Mangoplah Cookardinia United Eastlakes Goannas would need to have a handsome win to turn around the Eagles’ superior percentage rate.

The victory was the Eagles’ fourth consecutive win and their 13th of the season as they prepare to head into the finals series.

The Eagles’ multiple goal kickers included Riley Boag (5), Archie Boag (3), Judd Powell (2), Huxley Coelli (2) and Jye Winnell (2).

Their best players were Jaxon Curry, Riley Anderson, Riley Boag, Jye Winnell, Noah Tait and Judd Powell.

The Eagles will have an away game against the Turvey Park Bulldogs at Maher Oval, Wagga, in the final round of the regular competition on Saturday.

The bounce-up for the seniors is at 2.10pm, 12.10pm for the reserves and the Under 18s will start at 10.20am.
