Jerilderie visitor Paul McVicar enjoyed one of his best days at the races on Saturday, landing a winning double while taking home two of the club’s major trophies.

Early on the program, Four Esses had Ella Bent in the saddle and powered to a one-length win in the Community Bank Narrandera and District 1400m Maiden Handicap.

Later on the card, McVicar won the feature event, with John Keating guiding Boy From Tennessee to a length win in the Narrandera Ex-Servicemen’s Club 1400m TC Lee Memorial Cup.

The stable nearly landed a treble of victories, with Deebaa ridden by Blaike McDougall to a close-up runner-up finish in the Narrandera Bakery 1200m Benchmark 50 Handicap – the pair beaten 0.44 of a length by the Nell Foley-trained Deekaygeebee.

Still, the second-place finish meant McVicar finished on 14 points in the 2026 Peter Bloomfield Memorial Trainer’s Premiership, equal with Narrandera Cup winning trainer Craig Weeding.

It was a massive day for the stable, winning the feature race, the trainer’s title, and securing a winning double.

“It’s been a really good day,” said stable representative Josh Curtis.

“We had a couple of unexpected wins, which is good, but it’s been a very good day for the team.”

The hard-working Curtis has been a big driver behind the team’s recent success, and he said it came down to a lot of dedication and some good management by owners John Bourke and Paul Sweeney.

“It’s just hard training and the team doing their one-percenters - we are seeing the results on the track,” Curtis said.

“Plus, they (Bourke and Sweeney) find the right type of horses, pick the right races to go to, and it’s all paying off.”

The stable is in red-hot form, landing wins at Narrandera (x3), Wagga, and Gundagai in recent weeks, and Curtis explained that the team is ready to grow.

“We’ve got the walker, treadmill, and swimming pool, and the only thing we are lacking at the moment is a rider,” Curtis said.

“We are looking for one, and have a couple lined up, but it’s just a matter of whether they can get out here.”

The Jerilderie stable is hopeful of continuing their success at Albury on Tuesday, with last-start Gundagai winner Siyaasi taking on the 1400m Class One Handicap.

In-form hoop Brodie Loy is in the saddle and the TAB has the five-year-old Capitalist gelding as a $1.80 favourite.

“There are a couple we like going forward, and if Albury goes ahead on Tuesday, there’s Siyaasi, who is going well and won nicely at Gundagai. We also have Winter Hail, which is going really well.”
