The Barellan Two Blues 11.9 (75) defeated the Temora Kangaroos 5.16 (46) at the Barellan Recreation Ground in the second round of the Farrer League competition on Saturday.
The Kangaroos were caught cold in the opening quarter when the Two Blues raced away to a 20-point lead after the boys in blue and white were restricted to kicking just three behinds.
Rallying in the second quarter, the Kangaroos got their first six-pointer of the game and added a total of three goals and four behinds to reduce the leading margin to 16 points at the main break.
Held goalless again after the restart in the third quarter, the Kangaroos allowed the deficit to blow out to 45 points heading into the final stanza.
Although the Kangaroos added another two goals and six behinds to their tally, while restricting their opponents to just two behinds, the damage had already been done in the previous quarter and the lead was too much to reel in as they suffered their first defeat of the season.
The Kangaroos’ goal kickers included one each from Will Ford, Lachlan Leary, Lachlan Robertson, Isaac Reardon and Jock Cornell.
Their best players were James Godde, Rhys Leary, Blake Basham, Lachlan Leary, Zachary Oliver and Jack Cullen.
Meanwhile, the Kangaroos’ reserves 12.16 (88) had better fortune in their away game, beating the Two Blues 3.2 (20) by 68 points.
In contrast to the seniors, it was the Kangaroos’ reserves that came out firing in the opening quarter, holding their opponents scoreless while kicking three goals and six behinds to race away to a 24-point lead going into the second quarter.
The Two Blues got their first goal of the game in this quarter, but, extending their lead with another three goals and three behinds, the Kangaroos took a handy 39-point lead into the main break.
Adding another six-pointer in the third quarter, the Two Blues were once again outmuscled, with the Kangaroos adding another four goals and six behinds to all but put the game beyond doubt.
With a comfortable lead of more than 10 goals, the Kangaroos eased off in the final stanza, but still managed to outscore the opposition to easily secure the win and record their first victory of the season.
The reserves’ goal kickers included Robert Krause (4), Nathan Stimson (3) and one each for Oscar Bent, Samuel Connolly, Dean Ward, Matthew Krause and Harvey Holt.
Their best players were Robert Krause, Nathan Stimson, Daylen Coleman, Harvey Holt, Nick Holt and Angus Cooper.
In round three, the Kangaroos will host the North Wagga Saints at Nixon Park on Saturday.
