Former Matong Public School student Charlie Malone has received a Youth Community Service Award from the NSW Branch of the Order of Australia Association for his outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability, social justice and youth leadership.

Charlie was recognised for turning environmental awareness into practical action. He led a school recycling initiative supporting both sustainability and charity and was selected for the national Blue Minds Academy environmental mentorship program, where he developed a plan to expand recycling into other schools and businesses across Wagga Wagga.

“Throughout my life I have grown up on and around farms, this life experience has provided me with a keen appreciation for the environment and the importance of supporting our rural industries, communities and families,” he said.

“This led to me realising at a young age the need for us to coexist with nature in order to thrive together. Through the Blue Minds Academy I hope to build partnerships between local businesses and institutions in order to assist my community in becoming more sustainable.”

Charlie received his award at Government House from the NSW Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC.

The Blue Minds Academy is an eight-week online leadership accelerator that equips young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to turn their passion for the ocean and environment into real-world action.

By the end of the program, every participant has developed a tangible ocean or environmental project, expanded their professional network, and gained the tools to continue creating lasting lasting impact long after the Academy concludes.

From turtle conservation and microplastics solutions to youth advisory councils and volunteering initiatives, these emerging leaders are turning passion into real-world impact.
