Narrandera Shire Council Australia Day Committee has undertaken a review of locations for Australia Day events to ensure suitability in the context of extreme weather and accessibility requirements.

There were mixed opinions regarding accessibility of Lake Talbot Water Park as an alternate location for the Australia Day Awards Ceremony.

When extreme weather is imminent the Awards are held at the following locations:

• Narrandera Community Breakfast – remain at Marie Bashir Park with the Awards held at Narrandera Exies (if not available CRC Church).

• Barellan Progress Association committee moved their event to the War Memorial Club Barellan with the pool remaining open and free for the day.

• Grong Grong did not change any locations simply adjusted the Yabby Races to be Hot Wheels Races and added misting fans.

This year’s Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony at Narrandera Exies was very well attended (approximately 250 people) at the alternate location with it being more comfortable for attendees and participants.

The committee discussed a few aspects such as suitability of award gifts and length of speeches.

The Survival Day Family Day organised by the Narrungdera NAIDOC Committee was commended its great event.

Overall it was suggested there could be slightly more co-ordination of start times for events so the mayor and ambassadors can attend more of the day’s festivities.

Both sports awards and water activities were well supported.
