Griffith Police Station will begin accepting eligible firearms for the controversial national gun buyback scheme as the NSW government moves to reduce the number of guns in the community following the Bondi Beach terror attack. The December 2025 attack, in which 15 people were killed, prompted the government to introduce sweeping firearms reforms, including tighter ownership limits and the reclassification of some guns. But the changes have sparked controversy among regional firearms dealers and gun owners, who argue the restrictions will hit law-abiding farmers, hunters and businesses without necessarily addressing the illegal firearms market. The buyback will compensate eligible owners for firearms they can no longer legally keep, with the scheme having opened on Monday 2 November. Bookings opened at midday on Monday 26 October, through the Gun Safe online portal. Owners must complete a surrender application, receive a registration case number and book an appointment before attending a participating police station. Walk-ins will not be accepted.
