Narrandera-born ruckman Matt Flynn (pictured) has inked a two-year extension to stay at the Greater Western Sydney Giants after impressing in his debut season.
A strong recovery from an ACL injury in 2020 and a solid showing in 2021 sees Flynn earn the trust of coach Leon Cameron for another two years alongside four other teammates who also earned new contracts.
The 24-year old waited longer than most in the GWS academy before he got his chance to prove himself against St Kilda in round one last season.
Flynn took his chance and looked comfortable in the middle of the park for the Giants, managing to feature in 12 matches.
He finished the season with five goals, 30 tackles and 47 marks.
Giants Football General Manager Jason McCartney says Flynn and his teammates who also signed new deals will be key in the future.
"It's exciting to be able to confirm the re-signing of Matt, Jake, Daniel, Callum, and Will," McCartney said.
"We're pleased to extend Matt and Jake for a further two years. They've both played key roles in our side at different times and we're looking forward to them cementing their positions as they develop over the coming seasons.
His debut season had its fair share of thrills and spills.
The Giants spent 16 rounds outside the top eight and only cemented their spot in seventh place in the second last round of the season, qualifying for the finals.
In a nail-biter, GWS beat their rivals Sydney Swans by one point to qualify for the semi-finals but their dream run ended in Perth against the Geelong Cats.
Flynn’s place as ruckman wasn’t a sure thing with fierce competition for the spot.
Braydon Preuss signed for GWS but a shoulder injury sidelined him in the lead-up to round one.
Flynn took his chance with both hands with a key highlight being GWS Giants 93-77 win over West Coast Eagles where he scored his first goal in the AFL.
In a performance that was hailed as one of his best, Flynn rucked alongside veteran and mentor
Shane Mumford for the first time.
The 24-year old’s second goal put his team ahead just before the end of the first half.
Flynn is the son of Narrandera resident Graham and Julie Flynn.
