The Narrandera Imperial Eagles’ Football Netball Club (Eagles) senior team was on the wrong end of a heavy defeat last Saturday in their away game at Crossroads Oval, Collingullie.
The Eagles 4.7 (31) lost by 98 points against the Collingullie Wagga Demons 19.15 (129) in their Riverina Football League game.
A single behind in the opening quarter saw the Eagles facing a tough task to turn things around as they headed to the second quarter trailing by 34 points.
The following quarter started better for the Eagles, but they still headed into the break chasing a six-goal-plus deficit.
However, after the restart, the Eagles were held scoreless and a win looked out of reach as the Demons scored at will to take a 74-point lead into the final stanza.
The final quarter was the Eagles’ most productive as they kicked two goals and four behinds, but the Demons continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over at the other end to blow out the scoreline.
The club’s director of football, James Sullivan, said the team’s intensity levels fell short of previous games.
“Collingullie started really well, kicking with a strong breeze and we couldn’t get our hands on the ball and get through their defence,” he said.
“Our energy was down compared to other weeks.
“Collingullie’s spread around the contest was very good.
“We had a good start to the second quarter with some better link-up play, but we didn’t make the most of our opportunities kicking with the breeze and should have kicked more goals in the second and last quarters.
“We had another first gamer in Ethan Ryan.
“Our best players were our young brigade in Stirling Kable, Darcy Pendergast, Darcy Mimmo, Christian Davis, Connor Vearing and Jimmy Smith.”
The Eagles’ goal kickers included one each for Blake Renet, Samuel Severin, Cooper Irons and Christian Davis.
Meanwhile, the Eagles’ reserves 1.0 (6) could only manage a single goal in their 111-point loss against the Demons 17.15 (117).
Their best players included Tomas van Buuren, Callum Auldist, Austyn Rankin, Luke Paterson, Thomas Dore and Shaun Quilter.
The Eagles’ under 18s 11.13 (79) recorded a third victory for the season, winning by seven goals against the Demons 5.7 (37).
The Eagles’ multiple goal kickers were Huxley Coelli (3), Coby Sanders (2) and Riley Boag (2).
Their best players included Felix Warren-Porteous, Jaxon Curry, Blake Lawrence, Coby Sanders and Aston Hammond.
A home game against the Griffith Swan awaits the Eagles in the next round on Saturday at Narrandera Sportsground.
“We’re looking forward to turning the tables in a very winnable game versus Griffith,” Sullivan said.
“It’s all-day football with both seniors and juniors, so we hope we get a great crowd next Saturday.
“The under 16s will round off the day, starting at 5pm.
“It will be great to be able to watch some of our upcoming juniors after first grade has played.”
The bounce-up for the seniors is at 2.10pm, 12.10pm for the reserves and 10.20pm for the under 18s.
