Leeton Rotarian’s trek for charity

Leeton Rotarian Andrew Raadgever recently completed a three-day trek for families left with nowhere to live by disaster in Nepal helping to raise more than $40,000 for families around the world. He completed a gruelling three-day trek for ShelterBox Australia. The charity is part of the global ShelterBox network specialising in emergency shelter. Andrew was one of 16 trekkers from across Australia to take part in the annual fundraising adventure. This year’s Trek for Shelter covered more than 70km along Stage One of the iconic Hume and Hovell Track in south-eastern NSW. Trekkers walked through native forests, rolling farmlands, and alpine streams from Cooma Cottage to Fitzpatrick Trackhead via Wee Jasper. Andrew said: “The trek experience was good, the organisation was good, the catering was excellent, and having people from a variety of backgrounds was interesting. The distance on the road per day was a challenge to start, but we managed it surprisingly well. The highlight was seeing how well everyone assisted and got along with each other on a tough walk.” In a true display of Rotary service and hospitality, members from several local Rotary Clubs helped organise the event and support the trekkers with logistics and by preparing meals. The trek took place less than two months after flash floods swept through Nepal, where emergency shelter is still urgently needed. ShelterBox teams are working with Rotary and local partners to deliver tarpaulins, tents, solar lights and other essential household items, including to communities only reachable by helicopter. ShelterBox began as a Rotary project in 2000. Today, ShelterBox works differently. It stores shelter materials and essential items in strategic locations around the world, allowing it to be more agile, respond to more disasters, and tailor its aid to what communities need, rather than using a one size fits all approach.
