Narrandera Lizards Junior Rugby League has sent out a plea on its Facebook page urging locals to volunteer at the club for the remaining home games.
The club’s post stated that it understood families were already juggling many family life and weekend sport commitments, but it was important to recognise that the club relied on volunteers across all areas to function.
“From the canteen, to setting up fields, running games in vests, packing down and helping behind the scenes, every role plays a part in making game days possible,” the post stated.
“After our first home game, it was the same small group of committee members stepping in and covering multiple roles just to keep things going.
“This isn’t good enough.”
Stating the current situation was unsustainable, the club noted its committee members were unpaid volunteers and should also have the chance to “step back and watch their children play, just like every other family”.
“We are only asking each family to contribute a small amount of time, whether that’s in the canteen, helping set up or pack away fields, or putting on a vest to assist with games,” the post stated.
“This support is essential.
“Without enough volunteers, we cannot run game days properly.
“If this continues, we will need to seriously consider whether we can host home games at all.
“That means families will be travelling every week.”
Another potential impact of the lack of volunteers is that the money raised through the canteen goes directly back into supporting the junior Lizards and keeping the club running.
However, if the club was unable to operate the canteen, registrations would need to increase significantly to cover costs.
With several home games remaining, the club urged people to treat the situation seriously.
The club stated it was important for every family to do their part to ensure the season can continue successfully for all the children.
The club also welcomed additional help and encouraged anyone who has an opinion on how things could be done better, to step forward and join the committee next season, to put those ideas into action.
