Students from Narrandera High School joined more than 350 Year 11 students from 16 schools across the region to participate in the RYDA Road Safety Program, held at Yanco Agricultural Institute recently.
Delivered through a series of engaging and practical workshops, the program equips young people with the knowledge, skills and strategies needed to make safe decisions as drivers and passengers.
The program was made possible through the ongoing partnership between the Rotary Clubs of Leeton and Leeton Central and leading provider Road Safety Education Limited (RSE). Coordination of the program was undertaken by the Road Safety Officers from Narrandera and Leeton Shire Councils.
RYDA was delivered across three days, with students attending for one full day to complete the program. Volunteers from local Rotary Clubs in Narrandera and Griffith supported the event, providing a barbecue lunch and assistance throughout.
Since its introduction at Yanco Agricultural Institute in 2008, more than 5000 local students have participated in the highly regarded one-day program. This year’s participants travelled from schools across Narrandera, Leeton, Yanco, Griffith, Hay, Ardlethan, Ariah Park, Barellan, Coleambally, Hillston, Lockhart, Oaklands and Balranald.
The RYDA program continues to receive strong local support from a range of organisations, including NSW Police Force (Murrumbidgee Police District – Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and Youth Command), Narrandera and Leeton Shire Councils, Yanco Agricultural Institute (NSW Department of Primary Industries), Rotary, and Bruce Staines Driver Training.
Narrandera Shire Council road safety officer Rebecca Cassimatis praised the strong engagement from students and teachers.
“I would like to thank all students and teachers for their active participation throughout the day. There were many thoughtful questions, and I hope everyone has gained valuable tools to help keep themselves and others safe on our roads,” Ms Cassimatis said.
“I would also like to acknowledge our presenters, sponsors and volunteers – this program would not be possible without their support.”
