Coolamon Shire councillors have endorsed the draft 2026–27 budget for public exhibition following consideration at the April council meeting, with Mayor David McCann reaffirming council’s commitment to living within its means and maintaining a disciplined fiscal approach.

The draft budget outlines council’s continued delivery of both core and non-traditional services, reflecting the community’s expectations across roads, rates, waste, aged care, child care and regional service partnerships.

Coolamon Shire Council also manages the operations and finances of the Riverina Regional Library and provides support to REROC and the Riverina Zone of the Rural Fire Service.

For the coming financial year, the rate peg has been set at 4.9 per cent under the determination of the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.

The draft budget forecasts a $1.08 million operating surplus, with projected income of $25.58 million and expenditure of $24.50 million, including depreciation.

A capital works program totalling $7.13 million is also proposed.

Several major projects remain dependent on external funding, including planned upgrades to the Coolamon Showground in partnership with Harness Racing NSW.

Council will also continue its advocacy for a new Coolamon–Ganmain Multi Purpose Service, noting the potential implications for Allawah Lodge.

Planning has commenced for a new sewerage treatment plant, supported by land acquisition and long term financial strategies involving reserve building, grant applications and the potential for internal borrowing.

Council acknowledged ongoing risks associated with fuel price volatility and supply chain pressures but expressed confidence in its ability to manage short term impacts.

In aged care, Allawah Lodge has recorded improved financial performance, although changes to national funding models have created uncertainty for Allawah Community Care.

Cr McCann said the draft budget demonstrates council’s continued financial discipline, with no special rate variations planned.

“Council remains committed to living within its means while delivering the services our communities expect,” he said.

The draft budget will now be placed on public exhibition for community feedback.
