Merimbula bowlers Michael Wilks and Rick Holt combined with local young guns Jack Harrison and Matthew McComber to win the 2019 Bidgee Classic.
The Narrandera Bowling Club’s Bidgee Classic three day tournament drew 136 bowlers from Melbourne, Horsham, Sydney, Merimbula and Goulburn to compete for the $10,000 prize pool.
The tournament format consisted of eight games of 15 ends each. Three games on Saturday and Sunday and two on Monday were followed by presentations, with teams were heading home around 3pm.
Rain suspended play on Monday but the majority of bowers spirits were not dampened and when the bell rang out they went and finished. At the end of Game 8 on the Monday afternoon, the winners with seven wins and one loss were Michael Wilks and Rick Holt from Merimbula teaming up with local young guns Jack Harrison and Matthew McComber with the score of 151.
Tournament committee members, supported by a large group of club volunteers, worked faultlessly over the three days to ensure guests left Narrandera with special memories of the 2019 Bidgee Classic.
Sameera Bashir was back again this year to give everyone an enjoyable Sunday night. Narrandera’s local accommodation providers treated guests with welcoming hospitality and comfortable accommodation second to none. These visitors love coming to Narrandera for the friendly community and the great shopping and sight-seeing for partners to explore and enjoy during their stay.
Chair of the Bidgee Classic Committee Bob Blackshaw was happy with how the 2019 tournament unveiled. His committee, board members, staff and volunteers strive to make each year better than last and they did.
“Many teams have already submitted their entries for 2020’s Classic and this is testament to how enjoyable and well received the tournament is and together with greens in the immaculate condition that they are, why wouldn’t they want to come back,” Blackshaw said.
The Club extends sincere appreciation and thanks to the following: The 136 bowlers who made the trip to Narrandera and took part in this prestigious tournament, to the highly valued sponsors for generous support, to Amy and staff in the Four Sons Bistro for keeping guests fed over the weekend, to Sameera for awesome entertainment, to the Club Board and staff for everything they do over the weekend, to the greenskeepers
and grounds team for the immaculate greens and surrounds and finally, to the many volunteers for contributing so much of their time and effort
in the lead-up and over the weekend.
