Winning team No Fear Captain Ryan Bensch and All Sorts back stop Connor Smith are a picture of concentration as the teams battle it out in the grand final of the Grong Grong Annual Unisex Softball Competition held on Sunday.

Established in 1988 the competition has been running for 31 consecutive summers with players of all ages (from year 7) and ability across six teams taking the pitch at the Grong Grong Sports Club every Saturday afternoon throughout the first term of the school year.

Players from Ganmain, Matong, Wagga, Ardlethan, Coolamon and Narrandera compete every Saturday and then enjoy a barbecue meal and shared salads. (The salad competition is nearly as heated as the softball competition).

Grong Grong Softball Competition President Kent Steward says that the village competition provides a rare opportunity for mums and dads to participate in a team sport with their kids.

“It’s a fantastic social gathering through both good and bad times and a lot of laughter. Many non-playing families attend as spectators and stay to share a meal and catch up,” he said.
