Narrandera Shire seniors will have a host of activities to choose from to celebrate Seniors Week throughout the town and district next week.
Festivities will start with a Monday Morning Movie at the Narrandera Shire Library of April 9 between 10.30am and noon. It will feature “The Zookeeper’s Wife” and popcorn will be supplied.
The movie is a great and previously untold story of Jan and Antonina Zabinska, Polish husband and wife zookeepers, owners of the Warsaw Zoo, who opened their zoo to Jewish refugees after the September 1939 German invasion of Poland and continued to “host” people throughout the occupation, smuggling them out of the Warsaw ghetto, hiding them in animal cages and basement tunnels leading from the house to the zoo.
Only two of the 300 Jewish “guests” (as they referred to them) hidden in the zoo were captured by the Nazis and murdered. The rest survived.
Tuesday April 10 will be a morning tea and free Parkside Museum entry from 10am to 11.30am. The museum houses a collection of items of national and local significance so there will be plenty to look at.
A Seniors Over 50s Club lunch will be held in the Grong Grong Hall from 11.45am to 2pm on Wednesday April 11. Lunch will be catered by the Grong Grong Earth Park Committee and activities will include table and card games such as Skipbo (like Uno) and Phase 10 (like Rummy).
On Thursday April 12 there will be an introduction to family history resources at the Narrandera Library for seniors interested in accessing Births, Deaths and Marriages online, the Ryerson Index, Riverina cemeteries Database, Trove and Ancestry for Libraries. Bookings are essential as spaces are limited so phone the Library on 69595585 if you are keen to attend.
Seniors Bingo will be played at thje Narrandera senior Citizens Club from 1pm to 3pm on Thursday April 12 and prizes include $20 Coles gift cards.
