Narrandera Cup moves to a Sunday

The Narrandera Cup has always been the premier event of the season for racing fans from a social perspective.

The Narrandera Cup races will move to a Sunday instead of Saturday and be staged in July instead of August next year in what is considered a great boost for local racing.

Narrandera Race Club Racing Manager Michael Bailey said he had been advised of the change earlier this week.

The Narrandera Cup will now be staged on Sunday July 22. The normal Fashions on the Field and social festivities associated with the Cup are expected to be transferred to the TC Lee Memorial meeting on Saturday August 18. The NRC has been allocated one other meeting on Saturday June 16.

Bailey said he had been working on obtaining a Sunday meeting for the Cup over the past 12 months and it had finally been approved this week to be a full TAB standalone meeting offering $30,000 in prizemoney.

“There were only five starters in the $12,000 event last year but this will not be the case this year.

“It is expected to attract a large field due to the prizemoney,” he said.

Narrandera is one of only three full TAB meetings running on the Sunday. Drainage works completed at the track prior to Christmas, a watering system and other top class facilities established by the NRC had no doubt influenced the decision.

“July was always our biggest money meeting, whereas the Cup was more of a social event. From a racing perspective the change to a Sunday Cup meeting will be a great thing for the club and the town,” Bailey said.
