Narrandera Carpheads A Grade side recorded a hard fought five wicket victory over ladder leaders and arch rivals L&D Ferrets last Saturday at Narrandera Park Oval.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, L&D found themselves in early trouble thanks to some high quality bowling from Cooper Irons (3 for 10 off 6 overs) and Rohan Rehwinkel (2 for 22 off 8 overs).
Mark Tilyard (1 for 28 off 8 overs) and captain Brent Lawrence (1 for 22 off 8 overs) both bowled tidy spells as did Jacob Anderson who bowled very well and economically without luck to finish with 0 for 17 off his 8 overs.
With the bat in hand, the Carpheads got off to a shaky start losing opener Jono Doyle and vice-captain James Sullivan early on to leave the Carpheads 2 for 21.
This brought Ryan Argus and captain Brent Lawrence together in what proved to be the partnership that swung the game back in the Carpheads favour.
Argus and Lawrence put on 50 runs until Argus fell for a well played and hard fought 37 runs.
The loss of Argus triggered a mini collapse with Jacob Anderson and Rohan Rehwinkel both falling cheaply to leave the Carpheads 5 for 94 still needing 23 for victory.
“Mr Cool” Sam Argus came to the crease and together with Lawrence put the game beyond doubt with a 26 run partnership to seal the victory.
Lawrence finished on 41 not out and Sam Argus 13 not out.
Lawrence, who is A Grade captain, said he was super proud of every player in his A Grade team.
“It was a very tough contest between bat and ball. I was very pleased our boys prevailed showing true character and determination to continue to improve as a group.
“If we win our last two One Day games we will make the One Day Final. It will be do or die for the last two weeks of the One Day competition but that’s just the way we like it.”
The Carpheads A Grade team play The Phantoms this Saturday at Yanco Sportsground in what will be their last match before the Christmas break.
