Regional Express (Rex) and the Narrandera and Leeton Shire Councils have entered into a five year partnership agreement through until June 30 2023.

Only last week the Narrandera Argus ran a front page story that an agreement had been reached with Griffith City Council for cheaper air fares to Sydney, perhaps to the detriment of the Narrandera-Leeton Airport.

It was confirmed by Rex that the Narrandera Council had not sought such an agreement at the time.

This was soon rectified and a Narrandera Shire Council spokesman said a meeting had been sought with Rex to discuss the issue.

The partnership agreement will see the introduction of the Rex Community Fare scheme between Narrandera-Leeton and Sydney.

The agreement will see the introduction of a $129 “Rex Community Fare” which will be available on 25 per cent of total seats between Narrandera-Leeton and Sydney for advanced bookings of at least 30 days prior to departure.

In addition, all remaining seats 24 hours prior to departure will be available at the Community Fare (Rex Promo) level.

Rex General Manager Network Strategy and Sales Warrick Lodge said the Narrandera – Leeton was the 14th regional community in the Rex network to receive the successful Rex Community Fare scheme following the recent introduction of the scheme on the Griffith to Sydney route.

“I would like to thank Narrandera and Leeton Shire Councils who have always valued the essential regional air services provided by Rex, this partnership agreement is a continuation of the good working relationship that has existed over the past 16 years,” he said.

Narrandera Mayor Cr Neville Kschenka said it is important that Narrandera and Leeton residents had the opportunity to enjoy the same fare options as many other REX customers and the signing of this agreement would ensure that industry and travellers in general benefit from the offer now available through this new scheme.

“The timing of this agreement is very appropriate, especially as the Narrandera Shire is on the cusp of several exciting new developments that will attract new airline customers,” Cr Kschenka said.

“Our Shires have long been partnered with Regional Express and this agreement only strengthens that partnership and their commitment to our region.”

Leeton Mayor Cr Paul Maytom also welcomed the agreement with Rex and said he was sure the community would show support by choosing to fly with the local airline now that fares were more competitive.

“This agreement is a winwin. Rex will have greater certainty about their forward costs locally and our residents will have access to more affordable fares -something they’ve been wanting for some time.

“We value our regular Rex flights in and out of the Narrandera-Leeton Airport and the new community fare should see passenger numbers increase which will, in turn, help secure the long term viability of this important service” Mayor Cr Paul Maytom said.

The Rex Community Fare (Rex Promo) is available for purchase via www.rex.

  1. Good luck with all this. Rex, or Regional Express, are not that cheap anywhere. And they use mainly ex American Eagle aircraft they bought on the cheap from the U.S.
Nothing against the employees, pilots and flight attendants, who do a great job, but behind the scenes all is not that great. Jetgo was a huge failure in the region, biggest joke in aviation for decades. I’m not saying Rex will go the the same way, but if people don’t use the service, well, a 12 year old kid with basic maths skills could work out what the end result will be.
