The Narrandera Shire Council will submit a tender to host a 2018 AFL pre-season game at the Narrandera Sportsground next year.
In February this year Council hosted a successful JLT Community Series pre-season AFL game between Greater Western Sydney and West Coast Eagles.
The positive economic benefit of hosting this game was outlined to Council in a report to its April meeting.
To be eligible to host a pre-season AFL game the Council was required to tender for the match. It is expected tenders will be called in the near future and Council staff wanted to be ready to submit a tender subject to Council’s support to host this event again. The 2017 event was generally well received by the community and realised positive economic benefits.
If the 2018 tender is successful, the cost associated with hosting the event will be transferred from the major sporting and other events reserve. The Australian Football League (AFL) as part of its Community Series pre-season competition generally calls for tenders to host one of the pre-season rounds. It is anticipated that tenders will soon be called by the AFL for hosting rounds of the 2018 AFL pre-season fixtures. Narrandera Shire had the option of once again tendering for one of these rounds.
Attracting national sporting events, particularly televised events, provides a significant economic benefit to the shire. The nett benefit to Narrandera from the 2017 match was $451,205. It is anticipated the potential costs of hosting an event in 2018 would be reduced due to the significant work put into the playing surface during the 2017 pre-season.
The AFL determines who hosts the pre-season fixtures by way of a competitive tender process.
